AUC18 Lot No : 1

A Panchala collection of 24 coins, is being offered in auction for the very first time. The 21 kings included here, many of which are very rare, are being offered as a single lot. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a Panchala collection put together over several years. When the Mauryan empire collapsed, many new regional kingdoms emerged on its ruins. Panchalahad earlier been one of the 16 great mahajanapadas during the time of the Buddha. Draupadi, a central character of the Mahabharata, was reportedly a Panchala princess. This janapadahad been absorbed by Magadha when the Mauryan empire expanded across the subcontinent. The Panchala kingdom restored its sovereignty in the 2nd century BC,and its mitra/sena/ pala/ gupta kings issued a long series of copper coins till the 4th century AD. These are some of the earliest indigenous Indian coins to carry the name of the issuing king. These typically depict a deity or sacred symbol closely associated with the name of the ruler, and are important markers in the development of ancient Hindu iconography. Estimate
