Bahawalpur, Silver presentation / commemorative Rupee of Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan V Abbasi (1907-1955), struck at Dera Nawab, AH1342, 7.86g, Obv: Farsi legend (from top) - Ba-Fazl-i Ta'ala Sadiq Muhammad Khan Sarkar Khamis Abbasi Bahadur, Rev: Farsi legend (from top) - Farman Rawayi Mulk Khudadad Bahawalpur 1342 Julus Sanah Zarb Dera Nawab. About Extremely Fine, Unique.
Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan V was born in 1904 and as the only son of his father Nawab Muhammad Bahawal Khan V, succeeded him as a child of three, upon his death in 1907. A Regency Council, headed by Maulvi Sir Rahim Bakhsh, ruled on his behalf, till he came of age at 18, in 1922. The Nawab also received the rank of Lieutenant and was attached to 21st King George’s Own Central India Horse. The Nawab's full investiture took place on 8 March 1924. The Viceroy of India, Lord Reading, travelled to Bahawalpur in person for the ceremony and to bestow the 20-year old Nawab with ruling powers. A visit to any Princely State by the supreme authority of the colonial power, the King’s Representative in India, would be an occasion for great pomp and circumstance. A grand ‘Darbar’ was held at Noor Mahal Palace in Bahawalpur by Lord Reading, with the Nawab seated by his right side. At this time, the Nawab was admitted to the Order of the Star of India as a Knight Commander (KCSI), made an honorary Captain of the British Army, and a treaty outlining the limits of the Nawab’s sovereignty was worked out, making him the ruler of the “God-given Kingdom” (Mulk / Mamalkat Khudadad) of Bahawalpur. This coin was offered at Baldwin’s Auctions, London, in 2007 and has remained unique to date. The AH year it bears (1342), corresponds to the period 14 August 1923 to 2 August 1924. The mint is mentioned on the coin as “Dera Nawab”, and the name of the state is prefixed with “Mulk Khudadad”. These details undoubtedly indicate that the coin was struck to mark the Nawab's assumption of full ruling powers at the hands of the Viceroy, Lord Reading, on 8 March 1924. Dera Nawab, also known as Dera Nawab Sahib, was the winter capital of Bahawalpur State. It would have been the official seat of the Nawab in the month of March 1924. The coin could well be treated as a pattern or a trial design, but it is more likely to be a presentation or a commemorative piece, as indicated by very light signs of wear on the flan, towards the edges.
