Victoria Queen, Silver, 1/4 Rupee, 1840, DL, Calcutta Mint, W.W. raised, Wreath with 34 Berries (19L + 15R), MULE. F. Prid 108. GK 200. NGC Slabbed MS 61. Exceedingly Rare. In Numismatics, 'MULE' coins have held a particular fascination for collectors because they are minted from unusual pairings of obverse and reverse dies. In the 1840 1/4 Rupees, The Continuous legend obverse dies were used by the Calcutta mint in conjuction with the 34 berries reverse dies which had a dot after the date, or the 20 berry reverse dies which also had a dot after the date. Thereafter, when the Calcutta mint switched to the Divided legend obverse dies, they were paired with the 10 berries reverse dies which did not have a dot after the date. However, in some rare instances, the Divided legend obverse dies were coupled with the 34 Berries reverse dies as in the present coin. |
