Victoria Empress, Silver, Rupee, 1885, Bombay Mint, A3/II(i), 'B' raised at Bottom flower. F. Prid Unlisted. GK 499. Very Fine+. Very Scarce. In 1884, the Bombay mint adopted a B raised instead of the dot as its mintmark, and experimented with placing this mintmark either in the upper flower or the lower flower of the reverse. In 1885, the raised B in the lower flower was abandoned and only the raised B in the upper flower was retained for future years. In this respect, the present coin is an anomaly because it shows the presence of the raised B in the lower flower but not in the top flower. Could it be that for a brief period, the mintmaster toyed with the idea of retaining only the raised B at the bottom flower as the mintmark for Bombay rupees? It is coins such as the present one that make 1885 such a rich year for collectors of British India coins. |
