George V, Silver, 1/4 Rupee, 1911, Calcutta Mint, No dot, Pig-type. F. Prid 440. GK 1080. PCGS Slabbed MS 63. Exceedingly Rare. The bulk of the coins minted in 1911 was withdrawn from circulation and the unused stocks were destroyed, because the Elephant on the Emperor's robe was thought to resemble a Pig which caused many Hindus and Muslims to boycott the coinage because they consider the animal unclean. Consequently, 1911 coins are rare, and highly prized, particularly in the smaller denominations and fractions. This high grade original 1911, 1/4 Rupee clearly illustrates the cause of the controversy surrounding the coinage, for indeed the Elephant does resemble a pig. The animal was redrawn in the coinage for subsequent years leaving no doubt that it had a trunk and not a snout. An exceptional coin with a rich numismatic and political history. |
