| George VI, Copper-Nickel, 1 Anna, 1940, Calcutta Mint, Head Type I, No dot. F. Prid 961. GK 1384. NGC Slabbed MS 63. Extremely Rare. (Only 7 coins graded higher by NGC and none by PCGS in this category till 1/3/2025). The Bombay and Calcutta Mints in 1938-39 used the 1st or Young Head with long trefoils on the obverse for their Anna coins. This changed in 1940 when the 2nd or Mature Head with short trefoils replaced the 1st or young head in the obverse dies. However, on some occasions, probably when the standard dies broke or replacements were late in arriving, the older dies of the first or young head were employed, as in the present coin. |
